How Officer Pay Works
Commissioned officers are paid by grade and cumulative years of service, the same way enlisted members are. The O-1 to O-3 rows rise steeply in the first four years because promotion to First Lieutenant and Captain is largely time-based. From O-4 upward, pay increases flatten and promotion is selective.
Years of service count all creditable service, including prior enlisted time. Officers with more than 4 years of prior enlisted or warrant service are paid on the O-1E to O-3E table above rather than the standard O-1 to O-3 rows.
Pay Caps for Senior Officers
Basic pay cannot exceed the Executive Schedule. For 2026 that means $18,999.90 per month for generals and admirals and $15,408.30 for O-6 and below. The O-9 and O-10 rows begin at over 20 years because officers are not normally appointed to those grades earlier.
Officer Pay FAQ
A Second Lieutenant (O-1) earns $4,150.20 per month with 2 years of service or less, and $5,222.40 after 3 years. Officers also receive $328.48 per month in BAS plus BAH.
A Captain earns $7,382.70 per month at over 4 years of service and tops out at $9,004.20 after 14 years. A Captain with more than 4 years of prior enlisted service is paid on the O-3E table, reaching $9,609.60.
Officers who served more than 4 years as an enlisted member or warrant officer before commissioning are paid from a separate, higher table for grades O-1 through O-3, recognizing their prior experience.
Federal law caps basic pay. In 2026 O-7 through O-10 cannot exceed $18,999.90 per month (Executive Schedule Level II) and O-6 and below cannot exceed $15,408.30 (Level V).
